Under Ann Arbor’s Early Leasing Ordinance, landlords cannot yet ask current residents about lease renewals. We support that the City of Ann Arbor has changed this leasing timeline to better meet the need of tenants (good work GEO and CSG!). In the spirit of equity and fairness we DO NOT sign prospective residents to waitlists, ‘first right to lease’ agreements, or take holding deposits. We strongly feel that this practice, while common, is a violation of the spirit of the Early Lease Signing ordinance, speeds up the timeline, initiates the pressure on students, and benefits students with financial privilege. Ann Arbor also prohibits waitlist, holding, option, and showing fees. While Wessinger Properties does not charge an application fee, the maximum application fee a landlord may charge is $50. If a landlord does not lease a unit to an applicant, the application fee must be refunded within 60 days. We encourage prospective residents to seek out landlords and management companies who are in compliance with these ordinances.
